Academy Awards

Category: Film

A few thoughts on tonight’s Academy Awards. This was a weak year.
Of the five Best Picture nominations, there is only one great film, Milk. Slumdog will probably win. It was entertaining, and one of the few movies this year that didn’t lull you into a depression so deep that you contemplated killing yourself after watching. [...]

U2 - No Line on the Horizon

Category: Music

Along with REM, U2 was one of the influential bands that helped me develop my taste in music. We can all agree that the earlier U2 is the best U2. However, the band has quite a few gems sprinkled through their discography since their late eighties heyday. I’ve always been willing to give them a [...]

Palomino

Category: Milwaukee

My brother and I try to get together at least once a week for dinner and a drink. Our favorite destination of late has been the Palonimo. Nothing beats it’s bar food and drink specials. On previous visits - Wednesday night $2.00 Lakefront taps, Thursday night 2.50 Mexican beers & tacos as the food special. [...]

Hector’s

Category: Milwaukee

Hector’s, one of Milwaukee’s premier Mexican joints outside of the 5th and National area, which is conveniently located in my ‘hood, seemed like a good place to meet Connie and her friend Martha out for dinner and drinks after work last night. I arrived before they did so I took a seat at the bar [...]

Live Music in Milwaukee - Spring 2009

Category: Milwaukee, Music

I was lucky to have the opportunity to get out and see some really great live music last year. Here’s a list of what I saw.
Winter’s almost over and it looks like there are quite a few good shows coming to Milwaukee this spring.
Here’s what’s on my radar:
Black Lips - March 15th @ Turner [...]

Juniper 61

Category: Milwaukee

Connie and I celebrated Valentine’s Day with dinner at one of the newer restaurants on the west side, Juniper 61. Being fond of the previous tennant, Shiraz, we were interested to see what they did with the place. They completely gutted it, which was a great idea considering how dated the interior had been. Not [...]

SNL Valentine’s Day 2009

Category: TV

Wow. I’m speechless. That was awful. Alec Baldwin is usually a sure thing on SNL. Tonight’s episode was brutal. Baldwin’s Hulu ad was better than anything he did tonight.
- I laughed exactly once: “…the curious case of some old man baby…bitch pleeze!”
- The opening, pre-monologue skit had potential, but fell flat. I feel bad [...]

Beans and Barley

Category: Milwaukee

Man, I love this place. It was my first choice for lunch yesterday, but a big crowd and long wait threw a wrench in my plan. I woke up early this morning still having the itch to eat there, so I made it my breakfast and coffee destination. On previous visits I’ve usually ordered the [...]

Mayura

I was running errands downtown this afternoon. It was around lunch time, so I needed to grab something. I stopped at Beans and Barley. It was packed and there was a wait. I drove down Farwell with the intention of going to Comet when I remembered that there was a newer Indian restaurant in the [...]
